Manchester YMCA

Manchester YMCA is the second oldest YMCA in the world, established in 1846

By joining us, staying with us or supporting us, you’re now a part of that history. We were originally based next to the Midland Hotel on Peter Street but moved to our current home in 1990. The Castlefield Hotel is a trading subsidiary of Manchester YMCA and all profits support the work we do with young people and adults across the city.

Our current programmes

  • working with young people who are not succeeding in mainstream education by providing one-to-one support, mentoring and tutoring
  • supporting local people to adopt healthier lifestyles and make better choices around exercise and nutrition through a social prescribing project
  • partnering with a Salford school for young people with SEND to help them become more independent
  • running an on-line forum providing young people with a space to discuss a range of issues affecting their mental health

By staying with us, you’re helping us to do more of that work and create opportunities for young people to grow into the world.

Environmental sustainability

We’re committed to reducing the carbon emissions from running the Hotel and Y Club and reducing the amount of waste, particularly that which goes to incinerator or landfill. Recent steps taken include:

  • Installation of solar panels which meet 23% of our electricity consumption
  • New waste bins in the Y Club to separate waste at source
  • Hotel bathrooms are now on sensored lighting and bedroom electrics are key card activated
  • Change to using more local suppliers
  • Buying in bulk to reduce the number of deliveries per week

How to get here

We’re easily accessible with public or private transport and if you’re coming under your own steam:

Walking: just a short walk from Manchester City Centre. 15 minutes from St Peter’s Square according to Google.

Cycling: if you’re looking to get round the city once you are here then the bike is a great way to get about. There’s a Starling Bank Bike store just one minute up the road with bike and e-bike options.

Tram: the nearest stop is Castlefield which is just a 5 minute walk away. The Castlefield station has direct trams to Old Trafford (football and cricket), Trafford Centre, The Lowry, Exchange square, Victoria Station and many more.

Bus: Liverpool road is on the free bus route around Manchester City Centre so if you’re looking to get to or from Manchester Piccadilly or the Central Coach Station it couldn’t be easier. The bus stop is a 2-minute walk up Liverpool Road from the Hotel.

Train: if you’re arriving at Manchester Piccadilly, you can get the free bus or the tram to get to us. You’ll need to change at St Peter’s Square if you get the tram. If you arrive at Victoria Station, then the tram is the best option as it’s direct to Castlefield. If you’ve got cases, it’s probably best to get the lift down, rather than the steps.

Car: we have a car park for hotel guests which is accessed off Potato Wharf. Ask at Reception to book your place ahead of arrival
